As a precaution always bandage and apply leg coolers to you horse after hunting or competing. This will be comforting for your horse and will help with any minor aches and pains. Coolants for horses can be very expensive so here are some cheaper alternatives.
Free Leg Coolants
Cabbage leaves or dock leaves wrapped under a bandage are very good for cooling a horses leg.
Cheap Leg Coolants
Iodine tincture from a chemist mixed with any vegetable oil is an extremely good coolant. In addition the iodine is an antiseptic. Mix up in the ratio of about 8 parts vegetable oil to one part iodine. Shake well before use.
Be careful as the iodine will stain grey legs and your hands. However, this stain is easily removed with soap and water.
My preference
I bulk buying cheap Freeze Gel intended for human use via the internet. Sometimes this can be cheaply purchased from high street chemist shops for about £1 a tub. It is extremely effective and cheap.
Sabrina uses Freeze Gel in the Summer when the ground is hard. She has very clean and unblemished legs.
