In 1935 Akhal-Teke horses were successfully ridden by tribesmen the 2,600 miles from Ashgabad to Moscow. It took 84 days to complete this epic journey. For three days, the horses travelled 235 miles across the Kara Kum desert with no water.
What traits does an Akhal Teke have?
Small light frames: Akhal Tekes stands between 14.2 and 16 hands but the majority are about 15.2 hands. They have light sinewy frames which contributes to their exceptional endurance.
Colour: The horses’ have very fine coats and many have metallic sheens. Frequently their manes are very sparse. The Akhal-Teke comes in a range of solid colours from golden palomino, grey, and cremello to bay, black, and chestnut.
Personality: They develop strong bonds with caring and knowledgeable equestrians but are not suited to inexperienced and insensitive riders.
